Blue Emergency Light Law

N.J.S.A. 39:3-54.12

Our volunteers must obey all traffic laws, however as they respond to emergency situations in their private vehicles, they are often delayed by normal traffic which delays their response. To aid their response, New Jersey State laws allow for flashing blue lights to be displayed, alerting other drivers the we are responding to a call.  Under the law mentioned above, drivers of non-emergency vehicles shall yield to the right of way to the vehicle of any member of a volunteer fire company, volunteer first aid squad or rescue squad displaying warning emergency lights, as in the same manner as authorized or "marked" emergency vehicles. (N.J.S.A. 39:4-92)

When noticing a vehicle displaying an emergency warning light...

- You MUST pull over to the side of the road closest to the right hand curb

- DO NOT block any intersections

- DO NOT follow emergency vehicles closer than 300 feet

Failure to comply to any of the above mentioned is punishable under the New Jersey State Law as a

moving violation.
